HK secondary students shine in physics, math Olympiads

Hong Kong secondary students have shown the world the stuff they are made of by achieving remarkable results in this year’s International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) and International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO).

At the 48th IPhO, held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from July 16 to 24, the Hong Kong team captured two gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals.

A total of 395 physics students from 86 countries and regions participated in the competition.

The gold medalists were Secondary 5 student Li Shing-yan from STFA Leung Kau Kui College and Secondary 6 student Li Yang-hong from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School.

The 58th IMO, with 615 students from 111 countries and regions competing, was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, between July 16 and 23.

Secondary 6 student Samuel Lee from CNEC Christian College grabbed the gold medal for the Hong Kong squad that also brought home one silver medal, three bronze medals and one honorable mention.

Secondary 6 student Kwok Man-yi from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School ranked second among the 62 female contestants, harvesting the silver medal.

“The good results achieved by the Hong Kong teams showcase their ability in mathematics and physics,” Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung said as he congratulated the local teams.

The Education Bureau will continue to support and nurture more students with talent and interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, to strengthen the city’s talent pool, and boost its competitiveness in the international arena, Yeung said.

Before joining the Olympiads, the two teams had come off the local selection contests with flying colors and then received training in a series of enhancement programs organized by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, the IMO Hong Kong Committee, and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
