Eight arrested over sale of fake antique watches

Customs officers arrested eight people in Sheung Wan on suspicion of selling fake vintage watches and clocks, public broadcaster RTHK reports.

At least 244 suspected counterfeit watches and clocks were seized from five shops and two hawker stalls on Upper Lascar Row on Tuesday, the report said, adding that the items had a street value of around HK$40,000.

Investigation showed that the operation had gone on for about a month.

“We received intelligence that counterfeit antique clocks and watches are available in those shops, and we start our investigation right away,” Superintendent Guy Fong said, adding that the timepieces probably came from the mainland.

Those arrested included shopowners and a salesperson. They have been released on bail.
