China opening its doors to Filipino domestic helpers

China plans to deploy Filipino household workers to five major cities including Beijing and Shanghai, the Philippine Star newspaper reports.

China is offering up to 100,000 Philippine pesos a month, or about HK$15,000. The minimum allowable wage for a foreign domestic helper in Hong Kong is HK$4,310 per month.

Dominador Say, undersecretary in the Philippine Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), said talks are under way with Chinese embassy officials on the possibility of deploying Filipino domestic helpers to China’s five major cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen.

DOLE would have further negotiations on the launch date with a delegation from China in September.

Say said Filipinos are favored by the Chinese for their English proficiency, which allows them to teach their employers’ children.

Chinese embassy officials also mentioned the improving ties with the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte for the new policy.

“Filipinos are also peaceful compared with other nationalities,” Say said.

There is a strict work visa system for foreign workers who want to enter mainland China.

Philippine Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello said an estimated 200,000 Filipino domestic helpers are working illegally in China thanks to the growing demand for skilled domestic workers.
