Girl lucky to escape serious injury after falling off stairs

A 17-year-old female student of Pooi To Middle School escaped serious injury after falling down a flight of stairs at Kowloon City Plaza on Wednesday morning, Apple Daily reports.

The secondary five student, surnamed Tse, was on her way to pick up breakfast before returning to school for a remedial class.

She slipped and fell on her head while walking down a flight of stairs. Cleaning workers heard Tse crying while lying flat on the floor, saying she could not feel her lower body.

Tse’s father rushed to the shopping center and accompanied his daughter to hospital, where she was brought to the intensive care unit.

Tse, who just turned 17 on Monday, will be in secondary six come September.

Police found nothing suspicious after examining CCTV footage of the shopping center. They said Tse was alone during the incident.

Constance Cheung, principal of Pooi To Middle School, said she was told that Tse had regained consciousness.

Tse told her mother that she was trying to use the back stairs of the shopping center but decided not to as it was too quiet. Tse slipped when she hesitated.

Tse’s mother was quoted as saying that her daughter hit the iron bars of the handrails but the injury was not life-threatening.

A spokesperson for Jones Lang Lasalle Management Services Ltd., which manages Kowloon City Plaza, refused to provide further details about the incident, saying only that the case is uner investigation.
