Youth website criticized for siu mai eating contest

A youth portal is under fire for wasting food after broadcasting two hosts competing against each other to see who can finish eating 100 pieces of siu mai first.

Youth.gov.hk, the government’s portal for people aged 15 to 24, on Wednesday arranged a live broadcast on its Facebook page where two female hosts vied with each other to finish the siu mai, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

The incident drew criticism from netizens and an environment group who accused the portal of wasting food.

A video of the contest was later removed from the group’s Facebook page.

On Thursday, a Facebook post apologized for the incident in Chinese and English.

The group said it did not intend to waste food and that all the food was later consumed by the editorial team.

The youth website was co-launched by the government’s Efficiency Unit (EU) and Radio Television Hong Kong. Administered by EU, it began services in 2007.
