A 57-year-old man was killed and 15 passengers on a tour bus he was driving were injured in a traffic accident in Lok Ma Chau shortly after midnight on Tuesday.
Police said the incident happened at around 12:45 a.m. on San Tin Highway near Tsing Lung Tsuen, where a loaded heavy equipment trailer broke down.
A seven-seater van following the trailer was able to stop, but a coach right behind it failed to brake, resulting in a collision, Apple Daily reports.
The 57-year-old coach driver was thrown out of the vehicle and crashed into a road divider, leaving the bus hurtling down the highway without a driver.
The vehicle slammed against another divider 130 meters away, before a passenger was finally able to stop its engine.
The coach driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a government press release.
Fifteen passengers, including one female, aged 17 to 67, were injured.
Most were not in serious condition, and they were all conscious when rushed to Pok Oi Hospital, North District Hospital and Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital.
One passenger suspected that the coach driver had dozed off as he did not respond when yelling passengers warned him that they were about to hit a seven-seater van.
Police said the trailer and the seven-seater were parked in the slow lane when the incident happened, according to the newspaper.
The Special Investigation Team of Traffic, New Territories North, is handling the case.
