Man thrown off bridge in Tsuen Wan double traffic accident

A man was thrown off a bridge after a Kowloon Motor Bus double-decker ploughed into the scene of an earlier traffic accident in Tsuen Wan on Sunday.

At least five people were injured, including a motorist surnamed Lau, who suffered multiple bone fractures and was unconscious when he was rushed to hospital, Apple Daily reports.

In the first traffic accident, Lau’s Honda Type R sedan collided with another vehicle on Tsuen Wan Road near City Point, but no one was injured.

Police arrived at the scene shortly to settle the accident. Lau’s car had to be towed away, while the other party had left the scene as there were only minor scratches on the car.

While Lau, a police officer and another man working for a towing service were preparing to have the vehicle removed from the road, a Route N368 KMB bus heading for Tsuen Wan West suddenly appeared and slammed into the police car about 50 meters behind Lau’s car.

The towing service employee, a 49-year-old man surnamed Chan, was hooking up Lau’s car when the bus hit the rear of the police car, which consequently slammed Lau’s car.

The police officer was lucky enough to have jumped out of danger, but Lau, who was standing beside his Honda, was thrown 10 meters off the bridge and landed on another car under the bridge.

Aside from Lau, the KMB bus driver, two of her passengers, and the towing service worker were taken to hospital.

The police car was badly damaged with half of the vehicle chopped off and its air bags activated, while the Honda car had a crumpled hind and a bulging hood. The tow truck also sustained damage in the crash.

About 20 passengers were onboard the bus, which wrecked its left front, when the accident happened. Police cordoned off the crash site.

The 45-year-old bus driver told police she was unable to stop the bus in time and crashed into the police car. She was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

She has been working for KMB for more than ten years, and has been driving on the N368 line for around six years.

A KMB spokesperson extended the company’s sympathies to all those affected by the incident, and said it would cooperate with the police in the investigation.

Lau, who remains in the hospital, sustained multiple facial, neck wounds and a concussion, while his thigh bone was fractured.

He is said to be an avid car enthusiast and frequent visitor to online forums about cars. He had just bought his Type R sedan in June.
