Soccer pitch comes in for harsh criticism from netizens

A recently renovated soccer pitch in Sha Tin has been drawing harsh criticism from netizens.

The artificial turf in Ma On Shan Recreation Ground has just been repaired and reopened but netizens’ photos show only part of the soccer pitch was renewed with new turf, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

Only part of the mid-field area, part of the penalty area, and the goal area of one side have new turf, with the remaining parts unchanged.

The discrepancy gave rise to two different colors of the turf.

Sha Tin district councilor Mak Yun-pui, who once played soccer on the pitch, had expected a new appearance of the entire grounds.

Mak said he is worried the pitch will leave players vulnerable to injuries.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department said in response that the department and other relevant agencies are studying replacing the turf of the entire pitch.

The project is estimated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2018.
