A Macau couple thanked a Filipino man for saving their lives during Typhoon Hato which killed 10 people in the former Portuguese enclave last week.
The couple said they decided to close their pork stand at Mercado Municipal de S. Lourenço earlier on Wednesday when Hato was approaching, hk01.com reports.
When they were walking home, floodwaters suddenly rose and kept rising, stranding them in the water.
An online video clip shows several men coming to their rescue with a hardboard which they used to stay above the floods.
One of the men was later identified as Loreto Mijares Jr.
Mijares’s wife Jhunnafe said that although he can’t swim, he did not think twice about jumping into the couple’s rescue as soon as he heard their cry for help.
The only thought Mijares had right at that moment was to keep the couple alive without thinking about his personal safety, Jhunnafe said.
The couple gave Mijares a hug when they met on Monday and said they could not thank him enough for saving their lives.
Jhunnafe said race is never a barrier for people living in the same community to respect and help one another.
The couple are looking for the other men, whom they described as a Chinese man and a police officer, to thank them in person.
