Man arrested after browsing IS websites in library with toy gun

Police arrested a 26-year-old man from a library in Sha Tin after he was spotted browsing Islamic State (IS) websites while carrying a rifle.

The rifle turned out to be a toy gun, Apple Daily reports.

The man, surnamed Ma, is believed to have the Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism. He used to live with his parents and an elder sister at a Mei Lam Estate public housing flat.

Ma’s father died and his mother and sister subsequently moved out two to three years ago. Sources said the two could not stand Ma spending most of his time playing video games at home.

Ma entered the Yuen Chow Kok Public Library at around 9 a.m. on Tuesday and proceeded to the multimedia room on the third floor. He took out a toy rifle from a black bag and started to play with it.

Fearing a terrorist attack, library staff called the police and evacuated other library users.

When police officers arrived, they found a toy gun, a paper cutter and a hand-drawn map of MTR routes from Ma, who explained that he drew the map fearing he would lose his way.

According to hk01.com, Ma had circled the Nam Cheong MTR station on the map.

Officers also found that Ma had visited IS websites and another website on the history of Middle East countries.

Ma works as a part-time restaurant staff, according to reports.
