Woman, 69, dies after collapsing on escalator at Sha Tin mall

A 69-year-old woman who collapsed while riding an escalator at a shopping mall in Sha Tin died on Monday morning.

The incident happened at the New Town Plaza, a Sun Hung Kai Properties-owned mall in Sha Tin, at around 7 a.m. on Monday, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

The woman apparently fainted as she was riding the escalator on the way down, the mall’s management said, citing footage from a surveillance camara.

Management services staff called the police, and accompanied the woman to Prince of Wales Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

A spokesman for the mall said initial investigation showed that the woman did not fall from the escalator, which he said was operating smoothly.

The spokesman said the mall’s management services will fully cooperate with any official investigation.

The operation of the escalator has been suspended for inspection.
