Policeman seriously injured in Kwai Chung knife attack

A 49-year-old off-duty policeman was stabbed and seriously injured while he was visiting his mother in Kwai Chung Sunday night.

The officer, surnamed Ng, suffered cuts to his abdomen, neck and chest. He was stabbed at least eight times, hk01.com reports.

Police identified the suspect as Yeung, 52, a neighbor of Ng’s mother, according to Apple Daily. He was armed with an eight-centimeter-long butterfly knife.

Neighbors called the police after hearing Ng’s screams during a scuffle in a corridor in On Yam Estate.

Police arrived at the scene and arrested Yeung while Ng was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital.

Preliminary investigations showed Ng and Yeung had known each other but had no bad blood between them.

Police said Yeung might be mentally unstable. He was taken to hospital for evaluation.

Ng works at the Traffic Kowloon West Operations as a member of the Traffic Accident Special Investigation Team.

Kowloon West Regional Commander Cheung Hau-yip and several of Ng’s colleagues gathered at the hospital while he underwent surgery.

The procedure was completed at about 2 a.m.
