Police said the 39-year-old teacher surnamed Chan of the Society Of Boys’ Centre Chak Yan Centre School on Cornwall Street, was irked because the boy, of Pakistani descent, was making fun of him.
Chan slapped the boy hard on the left side of his face, causing him to feel a sharp pain and ringing in his left ear.
The boy did not seek medical help but the pain persisted for several days, prompting his parents to take him to a doctor, who found that his eardrum had been damaged.
The parents then called the police and filed a complaint.
Chan was arrested in Cheung Sha Wan on suspicion of assault. He is free on bail.
The Education Bureau (EDB) said it has received a report from the school about the incident. It said it is monitoring the case.
It reminded schools that under no circumstances should a teacher impose corporal punishment on students.
The Society Of Boys’ Centre Chak Yan Centre School accepts students with learning disorders or emotional issues. It offers primary three to secondary six classes.
Principal Au Pak-ching said the school has gained a reputation of accepting students referred by the EDB and the Social Welfare Department, but the truth is that it is no different from any other ordinary school.
Multi-awarded actor Anthony Wong Chau-sang briefly studied at the school during his primary education years.
