A 49-year-old father has been arrested for attempted murder after trying to commit suicide with a son.
The man, surnamed Yung, and his 30-year-old wife, surnamed Wong, live in Park Metropolitan in Kwun Tong with their twin sons, paying a monthly rent of more than HK$20,000, Apple Daily reports.
On Monday morning, a security guard noticed thick smoke coming out from behind the door of Yung’s apartment. He banged on the door to alert the people inside. Wong was woken up by the noise and rushed into Yung’s room to put out a stove of burning charcoal.
When emergency services arrived, Yung had passed out but his son was conscious while Wong and her other son were both fine.
They were all taken to hospital. Yung and his son remained at the hospital for observation.
The case is being handled by the Kwun Tong District Police.
Yung and his wife are both new migrants from mainland China. According to reports, Yung is a businessman and started living off his savings after he lost his money in a failed margin investment. He had been relying on financial assistance from his sister.
Reports said the family faced eviction after failing to pay rent. Yung had paid the rental deposit in July.
According to the Land Registry, the flat was bought by the owner, surnamed Li, in 2014 for HK$6.61 million.
There have been at least six cases this year in which parents have tried to kill themselves with their children.
On April 5, a 45-year-old mother and her nine-year-old daughter jumped to their deaths from their flat in Tseung Kwan O because her husband was leaving her. She left behind a six-year-old son.
