Apple delays HomePod smart speaker launch to ‘early 2018′

Apple Inc. has put off the launch of its HomePod smart speaker to next year, without providing a specific reason for the delay.

“We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers,” the company said last Friday.

“We’ll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.”

The HomePod was previously scheduled to ship in December, just before the shopping season of Christmas, CNBC noted.

Priced at US$349 (approximately HK$2,722), the smart speaker was announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in June this year.

It is expected to compete with Amazon’s Echo devices and the Google Home smart speakers, among others, in a product segment that is witnessing rapid growth.
