19 hurt in bus-lorry collision in North Lantau

At least 19 people were injured, two of them critically, in a collision between a bus and a lorry on North Lantau Highway in the early hours of Thursday, RTHK reports.

The accident happened shortly before 5 a.m. near Sunny Bay, when the bus – N31 run by Long Win Bus Co. – was travelling from the airport to Tseung Wan. The bus hit the back of the lorry.

The front of the bus was seriously damaged, with its windshields on the upper and lower decks broken. There were more than 20 passengers on the bus.

Police said firemen had to rescue two passengers trapped on the upper deck. One of them was unconscious when he was rushed to hospital, RTHK said. There were no fatalities, but at least 19 people were injured, including the two drivers of the vehicles.

The injured were sent to Princess Margaret and Yan Chai hospitals for treatment.

A bus passenger said those in the rear were only slightly injured, while the two passengers sitting at the front of the upper deck were hurt seriously, according to TVB.

“I guess the bus was travelling at normal speed, but passengers found the bus driver was confused as he did not open the door for people to get off after the crash,” said the passenger.
