Barrister drowns while swimming with friend during NT hike

A barrister drowned while swimming with a friend following a hike in northeastern New Territories on Sunday, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

After an initial investigation, police said they found nothing suspicious about the incident.

Albert Poon Ying-yin, 53, who specialized in criminal cases, took a boat ride on Sunday morning with 15 friends from Wong Shek Pier in Sai Kung to Yan Chau Tong Marine Park.

They began hiking from Wong Chuk Kok Tsui to Hung Shek Mun (literal translation: Red Rock Gate), which is known for its reddish, iron-rich shores.

After arriving at Hung Shek Mun, Poon and a friend decided to swim to a nearby islet at around 2 p.m.

On their way back to Hung Shek Mun, however, Poon is said to have encountered difficulties. He was unconscious when his swimming companion pulled him to the shore. The friend called the police for help.

A helicopter sent by the Government Flying Service arrived later and took Poon to hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

It is suspected that Poon drowned because of exhaustion.
