Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau Tak-wah has received an honorary doctorate from Hong Kong Shue Yan University for his outstanding achievements in the field of entertainment circles and contributions to the city.
At the university’s 43rd graduation ceremony on Thursday, the 56-year-old actor and singer accepted honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the university provost, Professor Hu Yau-su, amid wild cheers from the audience, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
Professor Leung Tin-wai, a professor at the university’s Department of Journalism and Communication, who read out the citation, praised Lau for his artistic achievements as well as his contributions to Hong Kong, noting that he has been a great influence to two generations of Hongkongers.
When it was his turn to speak, Lau noted that he was not going to make a speech, except to say, “Thank you.”
Interviewed by media after receiving the honor, Lau revealed that when he learned that he was to be awarded an honorary doctorate, he doubted if he deserved it.
He described himself as a person who always does his best no matter what the situation. He urged young people to seize the moment as time waits for no one. “Be a person who lives without any regrets,” he said.
Aside from Lau, Justice Patrick Chan Siu-oi, a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal, was also awarded an honorary doctor of laws by the university.
