New Year’s baby brings double distinction to HK family

A Hong Kong family is celebrating the New Year with extra cheer as it won the distinction of bringing in the city’s first newborn baby of 2019, and also now boasts five living generations within the same family.

At 00:17 on New Year’s Day, a 29-year-old woman gave birth to a girl at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, ushering in Hong Kong’s first newborn of 2019.

But that was not the only achievement in relation to the baby, which weighed 2.84 kilograms at birth and was given the name Hailey, after the Cantonese characters that mean hope.

With the arrival of Hailey, the family now has five living generations on the paternal side.

According to Apple Daily, Hailey is the first child for the parents Steven Tai Chi-wai and Abby Cheung after their two-year marriage, and one that rounds off a family with five generations.

Tai called the baby girl the best gift he has ever received in his life.

His great grandmother, meanwhile, is still alive, at 103 years in age. It means the family now has people from five generations.

Besides Hailey, Hong Kong also welcomed four other newly born babies in hospitals in the first hour after midnight on Tuesday. Two of those newborns were boys while the others were girls.
