A 31-year-old mother was arrested on suspicion of child neglect after police found her two children living in deplorable conditions inside a subdivided flat.
The woman has been living with her daughter, 8, and son, 4, in a 150 square foot unit on Nam Tau Street in Mong Kok, hk01.com reports.
The children and their mother were sent to hospital for medical check-up.
Chief Inspector Gisella Chan Yuk-man of the Mong Kok Police District said the girl, a primary 3 pupil, and her brother, enrolled in a kindergarten, last attended classes on Jan. 2 and Dec. 7 respectively, prompting their schools to seek the help of a social worker to find out what had happened.
Prior to that, the two kids had been skipping classes from time to time.
The social worker paid a visit to their flat on Thursday afternoon, but the mother refused to open the door until police officers were called to the scene.
Chan said conditions inside the flat were very poor with excrement left on the floor, apparently from a mongrel kept by the woman, and the boy was found without clothes. No visible injuries were found on the two children and all three looked normal.
The woman said she is currently unemployed. Police have contacted her husband.
A spokesperson for the Social Welfare Department said a non-governmental organization has put the family on its follow-up list, adding that social workers, doctors and relevant professionals will devise a suitable welfare plan for the two children.
