Over 10 million new phone numbers set for public use

Hongkongers will soon have a wider choice of numbers for their smartphones as more than 10 million new phone numbers are set to be offered for their use, hk01.com reports.

The Office of the Communications Authority said it has allocated about 10.6 million new phone numbers with the starting digits of 4, 7 and 8.

The first batch of mobile numbers with these new prefixes is expected to be available starting this month after operators have conducted relevant tests, the authority said in its press release on Monday.

A spokesperson for the office said the new numbers will be used alongside existing mobile phone numbers with the prefixes 5, 6 and 9.

In June 2016, the Communications Authority announced its decision to implement five measures in three phases to meet the demand for additional mobile numbers through more efficient utilization of the existing eight-digit numbering plan, including the release of new numbers.
