Van driver, passenger killed in police chase on Fanling highway

Two people died when their van hit several vehicles before flipping over while being pursued by a police motorcycle in the New Territories on Sunday afternoon, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

A video footage uploaded on social media showed a seven-seater van running at high speed on a Kowloon-bound lane of Fanling Highway as a traffic police officer on a motorcycle chased it.

It is believed that the van’s driver was trying to avoid a police check, leading to the chase.

As it was approaching Kau Lung Hang, the van crashed into several water-filled barriers on the roadside before hitting three other vehicles, with the van turning turtle as a result, the video showed.

Paramedics who were called to the scene confirmed that the van’s driver died on the spot. The lone passenger was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead later.

The dead driver had no valid driving license, and was found to have a criminal record with multiple offenses, police said.

The police officer who chased the van was injured, along with five people from the vehicles that were hit by the van. Doctors said they were out of danger.

A source at the scene said that after the police officer had outrun the van, vehicles at the front were told to help block it. However, the information has yet to be verified.
