Woman, 79, arrested after viral video shows assault on maid

A 79-year-old Hong Kong woman was arrested after a video clip showing an Indonesian maid being scolded and manhandled by an old lady, apparently her employer, went viral on social media.

It is understood that the footage came from the domestic helper’s mobile phone, who live-streamed the incident.

The video showed the old woman entering the room where the maid was lying in bed and berating her in Cantonese.

The maid’s nonchalant attitude seemed to have made her angrier. The old woman then smacked the maid in the face several times and also hit her in other parts of the body.

As the two exchanged heated words, the old woman appeared to cover the maid’s mouth and continued to hit her in the face, telling her that she would kill her and she was ready to die with her.

During the fight, the maid was heard speaking in her native tongue and sometimes talking to the elderly lady in Cantonese.

The video clip, which was shared by many other Indonesian maids on social media, was posted on a Facebook page dubbed Time News International on Thursday, hk01.com reports.

After learning about the incident, the Wong Tai Sin Police District dispatched a team to investigate.

A 79-year-old woman, suspected to be the old lady in the video clip, was arrested for allegedly assaulting and verbally threatening a 35-year-old foreign woman.

The case was listed as common assault and criminal intimidation.

She was released on bail on Friday morning, and was asked to report to the police this month, hk01.com reported.
