Police investigate North Point fire amid suicide suspicions

Police are investigating a fire at a temporary office facility at a construction site in North Point late Tuesday amid suspicions that the case may be related to a suicide attempt by a woman.

At about 8 pm, a container-box office located at a construction site of the Harbour North waterfront shopping mall, a development project of Sun Hung Kai Properties near the North Point Ferry Pier, caught fire.

Noticing the flames and hearing the sounds of explosion,  passersby alerted authorities.

Firefighters arrived at the scene soon and put out the blaze quickly.

However, as they inspected the charred office, they saw a woman lying on the floor with serious burns.

She was rushed to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the woman was an employee of the construction contractor and that she had been working overtime when the fire started.

Smelling gasoline in the office, firemen considered the cause of the fire suspicious.

They did not rule out the possibility that the woman might have tried to burn herself to death by igniting the gasoline, only to cause the broader fire.
