BMW driver arrested for crash that caused woman to lose a foot

A 28-year-old man was arrested and charged with dangerous driving on Monday following an accident in Kwai Chung on Monday that resulted in a female pedestrian losing a foot.

In an incident that took place at around 11:30 am on Lei Shu Road, a BMW car ran over onto a sidewalk and caused grievous injury to a woman who was standing there, according to the Hong Kong Economic Journal.

The victim, 36, was holding her two-year-old daughter and was waiting for a taxi on the pavement, when an out-of-control car struck a traffic signal box, sending it crashing onto the woman’s feet.

The impact was so severe that the woman’s left foot was severed, while there were multiple injuries to her other foot.

The traffic light box, meanwhile, got completely crushed by the vehicle.

Fortunately, the baby escaped unhurt.

The woman was rushed to Princess Margaret Hospital by paramedics who arrived at the scene soon after receiving a report.

The baby was taken way later by her family.

After the accident, the mother, despite suffering serious injuries, was only inquiring whether her daughter was safe and sound, according to a witness.

It is said that the woman’s left leg was completely severed and that doctors deemed it impossible to put it back together.

Hence, the victim may need to rely on a prosthetic leg in the future. Apart from the detached left foot, the woman suffered multiple fractures in her right foot and injuries to the sole.

The accident took place near Wo Yi Hop Road in Kwai Chung.

The driver was arrested and later granted bail. He has been charged with “dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

In another incident Monday morning, an 83-year-old woman was killed after she was hit by a garbage truck and was trapped underneath the vehicle.

The accident took place as the elderly lady was walking across a street in Lam Tei in Tuen Mun.

Police found the vehicle at the West New Territories Landfill in Nim Wan later that day and arrested the hit-and-run driver.
