Times Square wants Liu Xiaobo bust, exhibit removed

Times Square has asked the League of Social Democrats (LSD) to remove an exhibit and a sculpture of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Liu Xiaobo that the pro-democracy party has put up on the grounds of the Causeway Bay shopping center to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre.

In a letter to the LSD, the mall, which is owned by Wharf Properties Limited, said it has received complaints from the public about the misuse of the mall space, referring to the exhibit.

It also warned that it plans to remove Liu Xiaobo’s bust, along with the exhibit, through a court injunction “without further notice”.

A person who claims to be the mall’s chief security officer also asked the organizers to reduce the size of the exhibition stand and lower the volume of their public address system, former lawmaker and LSD member Tsang Kin-shing said.

Tsang said he will try to contact the Times Square management to enable the exhibition to be extended until July 13, the day the Chinese human rights advocate died.

The exhibition has attracted lots of visitors, but almost no one has complained about it, Tsang added.
