The United Kingdom is still the most popular destination for Hong Kong students seeking education abroad, but countries like Thailand and Malaysia are becoming more attractive, especially for those whose families are planning to move there, said Corence Wong, general manager of Neway International Trade Fairs.
Neway is the organizer of this year’s Hong Kong International Education Expo, which will be held this weekend. The expo expects some 6,000 visitors.
Chile is joining the event for the first time. Learn Chile, a government-backed educational organization, is offering four and eight-week summer courses for Hong Kong students.
The organization said Chile offers a safe place for Hong Kong students, adding that educational and internship opportunities are now greater because of the cooperation between the Chilean and Chinese governments under the One Belt, One Road initiative.
Hong Kong students will gain new, valuable experiences in Chile, which is rich in mineral resources, agricultural products and renewable energy, and has a well-developed tourism industry.
The results of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) will be released next Wednesday. Last year, 18,096 students were admitted to local universities, even as overseas education is becoming increasingly popular.
