As police grapple with an investigation into needle-planting incidents on double-decker buses, they are now confronted with another case of a miscreant deliberately seeking to injure unwary citizens.
Law enforcement officials received a report on Monday that a 56-year-old woman saw her flesh getting pierced after she sat on a wooden bench in Tai Po.
The injury was due to a needle that was found sticking out of the bench, which the woman had failed to notice before she sat down.
It was apparent that someone had intentionally implanted the sharp object in the wood with the aim of causing pain to unsuspecting members of the public.
The incident took place at around 3.30 pm outside the Tai Po Hui Market & Cooked Food Centre which is located along Heung Sze Wui Street, according to news website hk01.com.
It adds to the public safety concerns following the multiple cases recently where pins were found stuck onto seats in vehicles of a public bus operator, causing injuries to passengers.
In the variation of such mischief, an outdoor bench was chosen for the needle implant in the latest case, resulting in a woman falling victim.
According to a female witness cited by hk01.com, paramedics were seen attending to a red and swollen wound on the woman’s hip.
A needle, which appeared to have caused the injury, was handed over to the paramedics by the victim, who was later sent to hospital.
Calling the incident scary, the witness believed the pin was planted in the bench on purpose as many old people tend to take a rest on the benches set up in the market when they visit there.
The victim was reportedly sitting on the left side of the bench before her hip was poked by one of two pins planted in it.
Police cordoned off the bench and launched an investigation after arriving at the scene.
A check revealed that another bench in the same market had also been tampered with in a similar fashion, with officers finding a pin implanted in the wood.
Authorities are looking into the matter after listing the woman’s case as accidental injury.
A lady who comes to the market often told hk01.com that she normally sits on a bench there to take some rest after grocery shopping, before heading back to home.
Following news of a fellow visitor suffering a needle injury, she immediately conducted a check on the bench she sat and found a pin in the bench.
However, the object was lying horizontally in a crack in the wooden panels, rather than sticking out of the wood.
“What a luck!” she exclaimed, informing the police at the scene of her finding.
Following the shocking incidents, another lady said she may need to change her habit or look for safer alternatives for getting some rest.
