Policeman suffers gunshot wound from own weapon during training

A recruit constable at the Hong Kong Police College suffered gunshot wound to his thigh after a firearm accidentally went off during a training session on Tuesday.

The incident is said to have taken place sometime after 3 pm at an outdoor firing range of the college in Wong Chuk Hang.

The male recruit police constable, who had a revolver for firearms training, suffered a wound from his own weapon, hk01.com reports.

It is believed the gun went off by accident as the new recruit was putting the revolver back in his holster during an exercise.

The accident saw a bullet pierce the man’s right thigh. He was taken immediately to Queen Mary Hospital, where he is now in stable condition after receiving medical treatment.

Police were trying to confirm whether the accident was caused by the victim accidentally pulling the trigger or due to malfunctioning of the gun, according to media reports.

Following the incident, the police said its Weapons Training Division was conducting a follow-up investigation.

The law enforcement force stressed that it has stringent rules and guidelines in relation to use of its equipment.
