Man, 42, charged with wounding ex-girlfriend’s lover

A 42-year-old man has been charged with wounding after he seriously injured his former girlfriend’s lover in a scuffle.

A Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court heard on Thursday that the defendant, surnamed Shum, had dinner with his 38-year-old ex-girlfriend in Kowloon City on Monday, Apple Daily reports.

After the meal, they bade each other good-bye. Then the woman’s current boyfriend, surnamed Wong, suddenly showed up and confronted her for seeing her ex-boyfriend.

Shum saw the two quarreling and came forward to protect his ex-girlfriend. This led to a physical fight between the two men.

Wong was seriously injured and sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he lost consciousness.

The doctors treating Wong said his condition remained critical even after two brain surgeries, adding that he could turn into a vegetative state or even die from the injuries he suffered.

Appearing before the court on Thursday, Shum, a renovation work contractor, was charged with one count of wounding.

He was granted a bail of HK$300,000, with his surety asked to pay another HK$300,000.

The court adjourned the hearing until Aug. 2 as it waited for the prosecution to seek legal opinions and follow up on Wong’s condition.
