Uncle Four dangles cash for our Asian Games medalists

Home prices will always rise, while homegrown athletes seldom deliver a surprise.

So it is just natural to have a local property developer sponsoring local sports to inspire our athletes to give their utmost in competitions.

That’s why it’s nice to see Henderson Land taking up the cudgels for our athletes by promising them juicy rewards for their medal-worthy performances in the upcoming Asian Games.

Under the sponsorship deal, the company owned by Lee Shau-kee, a.k.a. Uncle Four, an individual gold medalist will get an HK$800,000 cash incentive while a gold medal-winning team will get HK$1.6 million, on top of the amount they will receive under the existing Athlete Incentive Award Scheme.

The sponsorship will also extend to medalists at the Asian Para Games after this year’s Asian Games, which will be held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, from Aug. 18 to Sept. 2.

More than 700 athletes from Hong Kong will participate in the two-week regional sports festival.

In 2014, Hong Kong won 43 medals, including six gold, 12 silver and 25 bronze medals, to rank No. 13 among all participating nations and territories, our best-ever record.

Henderson Land vice chairman Martin Lee Ka-shing said he hopes the commendation scheme would motivate athletes to perform at the highest level while promoting the sports culture in society.

“I wish the scheme would show our appreciation to and reward athletes who did their best and achieved good results,” said Lee. “In the meantime, I believe our support to the scheme would exemplify the role of the business sector in promoting the development of local sports and therefore motivating corporations to provide more support in future.”

Hang Seng Bank and Watson Group of CK Hutchison Group are among the leading corporates which have consistently supported the development of Hong Kong’s sports sector. It goes without saying the more support the merrier.

So let’s get ready to pray and cheer for our home team. Cyclists Sarah Lee and Leung Chun-wing, squash player Au Wing-chi, windsurfer Chan Hei-man and our many other outstanding athletes will surely do us proud once more.
