Fast-food chain KFC has announced that it will stop supplying plastic lids and straws for drinks for dine-in customers in Hong Kong and Macau, a move aimed at curbing the use of single-use plastics.
According to a press release Wednesday, all of KFC’s 71 branches in Hong Kong and Macau will no longer provide plastic straws and lids for drinks with effect from August 23.
Exceptions will be made for some designated special drinks and for takeaway drinks, according to KFC Hong Kong, a unit of the Louisville, Kentucky-based global fast-food restaurant chain.
A trial program had been carried out in nine stores, including the Maritime Square branch, Whampoa branch and Shun Tak Center branch, since July 16 this year.
KFC Hong Kong said the trial was well received by the public, and most customers did not ask for plastic lids.
Given the positive response, the company decided to make the arrangement permanent and apply it to all of its branches in Hong Kong and Macau in an effort to reduce single-use plastics and alleviate the environmental impact, it said.
“We understand the significance of the impact single-use plastics has brought to our environment, and thus we want to do our part in striving for positive change,” Janet Yuen, chief operating officer of KFC Hong Kong and Macau, said in the press release.
“We believe that every little step counts, so we decided to engage our customers and make the effort by launching this ‘no straws and lids’ action in all of our stores,” she said.
With regard to the no-plastic-straw policy, Hong Kong is actually two months behind Singapore, given that KFC has begun to implement such policy in the Lion City since June 20, Channel NewsAsia noted.
In addition to the efforts to be eco-friendly, KFC Hong Kong said it has also collaborated with some non-governmental organizations, such as Food Angel, to promote waste reduction.
Almost 2,000 kilograms of food has been collected since last year, and it has been transferred to Food Angel for processing before being distributed to those in need, the restaurant chain said in its press release.
