Digital assistants gaining wider acceptance

Amazon told the press at the IFA consumer electronics trade show in Berlin that its digital assistant Alexa is working with more than 20,000 devices, five times the number at the beginning of the year.

Brands involved also increased to 3,500 from 1,200 during the period.

Alexa was initially just built into Amazon’s smart speaker Echo, but it can now be found in smartphones, televisions, cars and a wide range of smart devices from different companies.

Huawei’s Ai Cube, ASUS’ Zenbook and Ambi Lab’s Ambi Climate are some of the new devices that have Alexa installed.

Despite the rapid growth of Alexa adoption, the Cambridge Analytica data scandal has raised privacy concerns and to a certain extent hurt the reception of such digital assistants.

Meanwhile, similar AI assistants from Apple, Google, Samsung and Microsoft are competing with Alexa for market share.
