The High Court sentenced a young father to more than six years in jail for violently shaking and slapping her new-born daughter, leaving her blind and in critical condition.
The 26-year-old man, surnamed Chung, pleaded guilty to three counts of ill-treatment of her daughter and one count of criminal intimidation of his girlfriend’s mother, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
The defendant asked for leniency and hoped that he could be given the chance to see his daughter again and say sorry to her, but Judge Anthea Pang Po-kam declined his plea and handed him a jail sentence of six years and four and half months.
In her ruling, the judge slammed Chung for committing a very serious offense that was tantamount to taking away the life of his daughter, who was less than a month old when the incident happened.
The court heard earlier that Chung, who lived with his girlfriend and their infant daughter, returned home one morning from his graveyard shift.
While trying to sleep, his daughter’s loud crying agitated him, prompting him to slap the baby several times and shake her body violently. He only stopped after his girlfriend intervened.
Later, his girlfriend’s mother arrived and asked what had happened to the baby. Angered by her questioning, Chung grabbed a chopper, but was prevented by his girlfriend from attacking her.
The baby, who suffered serious physical harm as a result, has been staying in the hospital since.
Now aged one year and six months, the child remains in critical condition and relying on a life-support machine.
Her right eye is blind and there is almost no vision in her left eye because of retinal detachment.
