The charred remains of a 56-year-old woman were found after a fire broke out at a residential building in Yuen Long on Sunday.
The Fire Services Department has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
At around 5:30 p.m., firefighters received a call about heavy smoke coming out at a unit on the 10th floor of Block 5 of Emerald Green, a luxury private estate on Shap Pat Heung Road, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reports.
About 72 firefighters and paramedics, with 19 fire engines and ambulances, rushed to the scene to battle the blaze. About 20 residents were evacuated from the building.
It took the firefighters about one and half hours to put out the No. 3 alarm fire.
Upon checking the unit where the fire started, the firemen found a charred body lying in a corridor connecting the living room to another room. Preliminary investigation showed that it belonged to a 56-year-old woman.
Meanwhile, another resident of the building, also an old lady, was taken to hospital after she felt unwell due to smoke inhalation.
