Two men dead in Sham Shui Po ‘murder, arson, suicide’

Two men were found dead in what police consider a case of murder, arson and suicide at a tenement building in Sham Shui Po.

At around 11:55 p.m. on Monday, police received reports of a fire that broke out in a subdivided flat at a tenement building, known as tonglau in Cantonese, on Tai Nan Street.

Police, along with firefighters, rushed to the scene and found a 68-year-old man surnamed Chu lying unconscious on the ground outside the building. He was rushed to Kwong Wah Hospital, where he was later certified dead.

Firefighters put out the fire soon afterwards, only to find the body of man with knife wounds to the face, head and back inside the flat.

He was later identified as Zhou, a 59-year-old tenant of the subdivided flat.

Initial investigation showed that Zhou had been attacked with a knife and a hard object.

According to Apple Daily, Chu apparently killed Zhou and set the flat on fire before jumping to his death.

Sources told the newspaper that Chu, who had been living in a cubicle next to Zhou since April last year, had asked the landlady to lower the rent of his unit because his income was not stable, but the landlady refused.

Apparently in retaliation, Chu often left faucets in the flat running, resulting in a surge in the water bill shared by the other tenants. Chu was not affected because his water bill was included in his rent.

On Monday, Zhou, who held a grudge against Chu, accused his neighbor of wrongdoing and the two had a big quarrel about it, which might have led Chu to kill Zhou, the sources said.

Afterwards, Chu must have set the flat on fire before committing suicide.

The District Crime Squad of Sham Shui Po is investigating the case.
