Amina Bokhary held after parents report her for assault

A 41-year-old woman who has had many brushes with the law in the past was arrested on Sunday after she was accused of assaulting her parents.

The woman, who is the niece of a top Hong Kong judge, is alleged to have attacked her parents in their home at Happy Valley.

At around 1 pm on Sunday, a couple filed a police report saying they had suffered an attack at the hands of their daughter, according to reports.

Arriving at the scene, the police found that the person being accused was Amina Mariam Bokhary, a woman who had won quite a bit of notoriety over the years for her rash behavior.

The woman, with a famous family surname, was the niece of Justice Syed Kemal Shah Bokhary, a non-permanent judge of the Court of Final Appeal.

As she was found to have appeared emotional, police officers took her to hospital for examination before they handcuffed her and took her to a police station for further investigation.

Prior to the latest incident, Amina Bokhary had been involved in several cases of violation of the law, including assaulting police officers.

One of the assaults on policemen took place in 2010 after an officer reportedly asked Amina to take a breathalyzer test following a traffic accident.

In late January this year Amina was granted bail following another incident where she was accused of driving with a suspended license and without third-party insurance.

She has been wanted since last week because she failed to report herself to police on time in mid-February.

A police source told the Hong Kong Economic Journal on Sunday that Amina has been detained on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

She appeared before the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts on Monday to face six charges including one count of driving with a suspended license, one count of driving without third-party insurance, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of common assault, media reports said.

The prosecution made a submission of no case to answer for the time being but the application for bail has been refused.

Following the decision, Amina needs to be remanded by the Correctional Services Department. She will appear at the court again on April 1, pending two psychiatric evaluation reports.

Meanwhile, an investigation is underway by a team from the Wan Chai district police.
