A 19-year-old student from a Tsuen Wan school died on Monday after collapsing during a physical education (PE) lesson.
The Secondary 4 pupil, surnamed Xiao, from Lui Ming Choi Lutheran College collapsed to the ground when he was doing warm-up exercises along with other classmates during a PE session.
The incident took place at around 10 am at the Shing Mun Valley Sports Ground.
According to Apple Daily, the student was said to be pacing around at the side of the sports ground before feeling unwell and then fainting.
The PE teacher immediately notified a staffer of the facility to bring over an automated external defibrillator (AED) so as to perform first aid.
The teacher applied first aid treatment using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the AED. The staff member of the sports ground, meanwhile, called the police.
Xiao was rushed to Yan Chai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, causing immense distress to his family.
The student’s mother is reported to have remarked that she had been signing a letter every year confirming that her son should be excluded from participation in vigorous sports.
Principal of the school, Ma Yuk-kuen, told Apple Daily on Monday afternoon that the student, a mainland immigrant, enrolled at the institution more than a year ago as a Secondary 3 student.
According to Ma, Xiao had average academic performance and was deemed to be of good conduct. As per her knowledge, the young man liked sports, such as running, she said.
Initial investigation prompted the police to determine that there were no suspicious circumstances in relation to Xiao’s death.
According to them, they were made aware that the dead student may have had a heart problem.
A post-mortem will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the student’s death.
