Xi proposes work group for South America railway

President Xi Jinping wants China, Peru and Brazil to work on a planned railway across the South American continent, Xinhua reported Thursday.

Xi revealed the proposal during a meeting with Peruvian President Ollanta Humala. The three countries will issue a statement on the railway project which will connect the Peruvian Pacific coast to Brazil’s Atlantic coast.

A working group will be established to handle related aspects of the projects, including planning, design, construction and operation of the transcontinental rail.

Xi is in Brasilia for a state visit to the South American country, where he has taken part in the sixth summit of the emerging-market bloc of BRICS. He is also scheduled to attend a China-Latin America summit.

Brazil is the first leg of Xi’s ongoing Latin America tour, which will also take him to Argentina, Venezuela and Cuba.
