The novel coronavirus appears more contagious than SARS.

In just three weeks, the number of people with Covid-19 aboard the cruise ship Diamond Princess soared to more than 600 as of late February.

But I believe that as long as Hong Kong people make a concerted effort to prevent and combat the disease, this epidemic will gradually ease.

It is important for our citizens to bear in mind that in order to win this war against Covid-19, everybody must play their part.

The SAR government, of course, must lead and coordinate the campaign to contain the spread of the virus.

However, each and every citizen must eagerly participate in this campaign, including by washing their hands frequently, maintaining social distancing, wearing face masks in crowded places, and strictly observing good household and toilet hygiene.

If feeling unwell, one must wear a mask at all times in order to protect others from getting infected. They must practice self-quarantine to avoid cluster infections and seek medical treatment promptly.

I also urge members of the public to maintain their faith in our healthcare personnel who are deeply committed to fighting the disease.

This is important because public confidence is key to fostering unity in society amid the outbreak and boosting the morale of healthcare workers, who are fully committed to guarding the health of Hong Kong citizens.
