When are we going to get our HK$5,000 e-vouchers?
Among the economic stimulus measures financial chief Paul Chan revealed yesterday in the 2021-22 budget, the disbursement of HK$5,000 spending e-vouchers is probably what the public is most interested in.
The coupons would be distributed in five batches. Among others, e-payment operator Octopus and payment apps including Alipay and PayMe will be invited to participate in the scheme aimed at stimulating local consumption.
More than 7 million Hongkongers are expected to benefit from the handout. The initiative is going to cost the government HK$36 billion.
According to initial reports, the registration process for the coupons could start as soon as summer. They will be distributed monthly and will expire in one month. But details are still being finalized.
Local businesses are expected to drum up their promotion activities to take advantage of the scheme.
While retailers and the catering sector are generally excited about the business opportunity, some are not entirely happy about the instalment approach, which is said to be limiting the options of consumers.
