Japanese cartoon characters including Doraemon, Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece, and Totoro from My Neighbor Totoro have taken up residence at the Occupy Central site in Admiralty since Monday night.

They all wear yellow ribbons and hold yellow umbrellas in support of the protesters.

Earlier, a cardboard cutout of President Xi Jinping carrying an umbrella had shown up in the protest zone.

A man who called himself Wai Lun made cutouts of the cartoon characters to keep Xi company, Apple Daily reported Wednesday.

There are eight of them spread out over the area.

Luffy stands in front of the banner "I want genuine universal suffrage," and Edward Elric from the Fullmetal Alchemist manga series can be seen at the barricades.

They are passionate characters who have the "never give up" spirit and can provide support to the protesters, the report quoted Wai Lun as saying.

He said the government has to respond to the students' requests if they persist in their occupation of the streets, but he is quite worried about a delegation of the Hong Kong Federation of Students going to Beijing.
