Mainland Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi will start selling its flagship model Mi 4i in Hong Kong on May 12.

The new phone features a 5 inch 1080p high-definition screen and a 3120 mAh battery, which the firm says allows 1.5 days of normal usage.

Hugo Barra, vice president of Xiaomi Global, announced at the launch in Hong Kong Tuesday that the phone, priced at HK$1,599 (US$205), will be avaliable through the firm's official online sales channel starting May 12 at 12 pm, without prior registration.

Local carrier CSL will at the same time start to provide phones for customers on mobile service contracts.

Hong Kong is the second stop after the Mi 4i, tailored for international markets, debuted in India two weeks ago.

The firm also introduced it in Singapore Tuesday, and Taiwan is the next step.

Barra said an experience center, called Mi Home, will open in Hong Kong in the "next few weeks". A company source said it will be located in Mong Kok.

In response to rumors that Xiaomi is planning to go public, Barra said he has no knowledge of any plan for an initial public offering and doesn't see it happening in the foreseeable future.
