Formula car racing is within reach of Hong Kong fans lucky enough to make a summer intern program.

The program is a joint venture between Hong Kong shopping arcade New Town Plaza and local team BlackArts Racing (BAR).

Successful candidates will be sent to Japan in September for pre-race preparations and to watch the Formula One Grand Prix.

In October, the lucky winner will undergo training in Zhuhai in a Formula Renault 2.0 car capable of speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour.

The climax of the program will see the intern advance to the BAR support team in an overseas race in January.

The intern will be paid HK$12,000 (US$1,550) a day for a five-day stint as pit crew.

The prospect sounds exciting for Kenneth Chan, a 17-year-old amateur kart racer.

Chan sees it as a chance to pursue his dreams and a stepping stone to the world of professional racing.

Chan, whose father is a professional car racer, was just 10 when he first put his hands on the wheel of a go-kart.
