Thieves broke into a Maxim's Cakes shop in Cheung Sha Wan and carted away 84 boxes of mooncakes worth about HK$20,000 (US$2,580), Headline Daily reported on Tuesday.

The theft was discovered by an employee shortly after opening the shop on Castle Peak Road at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Police searched the neighborhood but failed to find any suspect. They said the thieves could have used a trolley cart or a vehicle to transport the goods.

It was learned that the thieves also took away an undetermined number of mooncake coupons, which the store manager said were invalid.

A spokesman for Maxim’s Group cautioned consumers against obtaining mooncake coupons from unknown sources or suspicious individuals and to watch out for signs of tampering on the coupons.

Mooncakes are traditionally consumed or given to relatives and friends to mark the Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Sept. 27 this year.
