A former Beijing propaganda official has splashed out US$100,000 on a full-page advertisement in the New York Times to "warmly welcome" President Xi Jinping in his upcoming US visit.

Zhu Daping, chairman of publishing company China Media Times Inc., said he did it as a private citizen and denied any links to the Chinese government, according to Ming Pao Daily.

In August, China Media Times launched two English books on Xi targeting New York Times readers.

Zhu said he advertises on the Times to promote his company, not only to welcome visiting Chinese leaders.

The advertisement features the Chinese flag and the Great Wall, emblazoned with "Warmly Welcome President Xi to visit the United States".

China Media Times was established in 2008 when Beijing launched external propaganda.

Zhu worked on the propaganda committee of the Beijing municipal party from 1993 to 1999.
