"You're terminated."

That could well be the next punchline in NBC's hit reality series The Celebrity Apprentice when Arnold Schwarzenegger takes over from Donald Trump who famously pensioned off celebrities by telling them, "you're fired".

Schwarzenegger, whose last big job was running the largest US state as governor of California, is adding reality TV to his credits that include action blockbuster The Terminator.

He will come aboard for the 2016-2017 season, replacing Donald Trump who could be the next US president.

Schwarzenegger, 68, has been in the movies for decades, grossing billions of dollars in worldwide ticket sales, according to Bloomberg.

“Arnold Schwarzenegger is the epitome of a global brand in entertainment and business, and his accomplishments in the political arena speak for themselves," Paul Telegdy, president of alternative and late night programming of NBC Entertainment, said in the statement.

Trump hosted seven seasons of The Celebrity Apprentice.

In June, NBC said it was ending its business relationship with Trump, citing “recent derogatory statements” about immigrants during a speech announcing his campaign as a Republican presidential candidate.

In the show, well-known contestants compete to win money for a charity of their choice.

Past winners include Joan Rivers, Piers Morgan, Bret Michaels, Trace Adkins, Arsenio Hall, John Rich and Leeza Gibbons.

“I am thrilled to bring my experience to the boardroom and to continue to raise millions for charity,” Schwarzenegger said.
