Police arrested five customers of a hot pot joint in Kowloon City after they refused to pay their bill and beat up two employees on Sunday, Ming Pao Daily reported on Monday.

The three men and two women, aged 22-26, four of whom are foreigners, consumed food and drinks worth HK$5,800 (US$748.38) at a restaurant on Fuk Lo Tsun Road.

When they were given the bill at about 1 a.m., they said the charges were outrageous and refused to pay.

While arguing with the staff, one of the customers, identified as Jan, 23, allegedly beat up two employees, including a female worker, before the police came and arrested them.

A menu displayed outside the restaurant showed that a set for 10 to 12 people costs HK$3,988 plus 10 percent service charge, or around HK$4,400.

It was understood that some of those in the group of customers later came back and settled the bill.
