HK should diversify its securities markets, industry group says

Hong Kong Securities Association chairman Benny Mau has urged Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (00388.HK) to develop more diversified securities markets in the city.
The capital market in Hong Kong is too focused on equities, instead of the variety of financial products that it is capable of developing, Mau was quoted as saying in a report by the Hong Kong Economic Journal Thursday.
The Hong Kong stock exchange should turn itself into a "supermarket" of financial instruments by providing participants with a transparent trading platform for products including foreign exchange, commodities futures, bonds and funds, Mau said.
The securities veteran has submitted a proposal to the stock exchange in this regard.
Meanwhile, Mau said, there is a gap between Chinese brokerage firms and Chinese banks and insurers, which are already world-class.
Mainland securities firms are poised to further expand after decades of presence in Hong Kong, as enterprises on the mainland have to depend on financial institutions to raise funds, Mau said.
The same applies to mainland investors seeking opportunities abroad, he said.
