A 42-year-old man was arrested for stealing a box of Hello Kitty coloring pens from a 7-Eleven convenience store in Kwun Tong.

The suspect, surnamed Yeung, was carrying a plastic knife and zopiclone sleeping pills.

A policeman sustained leg injury when Yeung resisted arrest, shouting profanities as he was led away, Apple Daily reports.

The theft took place around 11 a.m. in a 7-Eleven outlet in Tsui Ping Estate.

A shop assistant, surnamed Chan, said Yeung came into the shop and approached the counter.

She asked him if he was looking for anything specific but got no reply.

Yeung walked around the shelves, took a box of coloring pens and left without paying, she said.

Chan gave chase, helped by two passers-by.

Several policemen who happened to be on patrol in the area stopped Yeung about 100 meters from the store.

Chan said she did not know Yeung had a knife, adding she forgot the company’s procedures for handling a robbery because everything happened so fast.

Yeung later told police he was going to sell the gift set, which is part of a joint promotion between 7-Eleven and Sanrio, the maker of Hello Kitty products.

A similar set is available for more than HK$1,000 (US$128) on Alibaba's Taobao online marketplace.

In Hong Kong, customers who collect a special coupon for every HK$20 purchase, or three coupons for purchases of HK$40 or more can use them to buy one of 12 coloring pens in the gift set.

The set comes in popular themes such as Hello Kitty, My Melody and Little Twin Stars.
